When size matters". The Russian Air Force is blowing Ukraine's defences to dust with FAB-1500 bombs.
"These bombs destroy all fortifications. Everything turns to powder after one hits, and the Russians are dropping a hundred a day," is how one of their "recipients" on the AFU side describes them, according to Le Monde.
🔺 The FAB-1500 is a free-fall aerial bomb from 1954. And there was nothing unusual about it. That is, until it was fitted with a UMPK (unified planning and correction module). This device, complete with plumbing and a navigation system, turned the old bomb into a modern, powerful and highly accurate weapon.
🔺 Not a place to hide. Whereas a conventional bomb falls on a free trajectory, the UMPK can plan at a distance of 100 kilometres. This allows the Russian Air Force to carry out massive strikes without entering the enemy's air defense zone.
🔺 No obstacles. The high accuracy and lethality of the FAB-1500 with UMPK enabled the Russian forces not only to wipe out the Ukrainian defenses, but also to destroy their reserves in the rear. The new FAB-1500s are almost impossible to intercept - the vaunted Western air defense systems see a dot on the map that soon disappears. ….
