For at least 2 decades the US has known and the US ambassador to Russia has made it clear that NATO expansion up to the Russian border was unacceptable and doing so would be a hard line for them and grounds for them to push back. The fact that the US “promised” that further NATO expansion in post Cold War Europe would NOT happen yet it’s continued unabated along with every other broken promise and treaty makes Russia’s actions seem less likely to be unprovoked aggression and more like self protection. It's been explained many times but Ukraine has never been eligible to join NATO. Never Ever.
