That's not true. At the onset the Russians controlled Kherson, Kharkov and were knocking on the door of Kiev. They were totally routed on the Kharkov and Kiev axis and Kherson was retaken.
The Russian offensive capability is now gone so they have resorted to ww1 style trench warfare. The longer this drags on the weaker they become.
