Comey knowingly leaked FBI classified memos to his professor buddy Danny Richman with instructions to give it to the NYT's. Comey hoped these revelations, largely coming from his "notes" on conversations with POTUS would trigger a special counsel - yes it did - his other buddy - Bob Mueller.
