coyotes just get a lot more scarce when wolves are in the area. They don't move around as much and they stick to heavier cover (usually), so you don't see them as often. Coyotes have always been in the Arrowhead country and yet, you hardly ever see them up there. The wolves keep them in line.

FWIW, the first coyote known to Europeans was collected in Iowa by Lewis and Clark. They were not found east of the Mississippi until late in the 20th century. But north and west, they extend to the coasts and always have.
