If you smell gas in a room, or floor drain that doesn't get used often, add water as needed to the trap, or add 1 cup of cooking oil to the drain,oil doesn't evaporate like water.

That is exactly what I do. I dump a bit of water down the drain before I wash clothes. If I remember that is.
