Tom, I don't give a damn about my lawn. for years, I rarely cut it and when I did, I used a bushhog on my tractor. But there are no holes here. Just divots. Sorry but your firebug fantasy isn't going to work here.
The tarp and oil would definitely mess with them - and with my dogs, which would then mess the house, which would mess with my wife, which would definitely mess me up but good.
I'll just let them do their thing. It sure is strange however.
